April 23, 2003: One of the Best I have seen

Manchester United 4, Real Madrid 3

UEFA Champions League quarterfinal second leg  at Old Trafford in Manchester, England on April 23, 2003)

Manchester United and Real Madrid are two of the most famous clubs in the world.   They went  head-to-head for a place in the semifinal, with Real holding a 3-1 advantage from the first leg at the Bernabeu.

The night belonged to Brazilian  Ronaldo, who was considered to be the best player in the world at that time.  He scored a  hat trick to put the Spanish side 6-3 up on aggregate just after halftime — and 3-2 ahead on the night.

With United desperately seeking a miraculous revival and failing to surrender. David Beckham, just months away from a transfer to Madrid, came on as a substitute and scored  a spectacular free kick and scoring another within five minutes.

United could not find the two extra goals needed to advance, but the seven goals and the high quality of soccer display that night made it one of the best games that I have seen in the last 10 years.  Take a look at some of the goals.
